|Six years ago anti-government protests in Syria began what has since become one of the greatest humanitarian crises of our lifetime. Since March of 2011 more than 200,000 Syrians have lost their lives, first in a civil war and then at the hand of The Islamic State in one of the most brutal terrorist campaigns ever launched. More than 11 million people have been forced from their homes, with 4 million living as refugees in neighboring countries such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan and another 7 million being internally displaced within Syria.|
|Today more than 4 out of every 5 Syrians are living in poverty. They have been traumatized by war, the loss of loved ones, homes and belongings. They have little to no access to even the most basic needs, including shelter, food, water and health care. Those who have managed to leave Syria (mostly women and children) are part of the largest refugee population in the world. They live in overcrowded and ever deteriorating conditions inside and outside of UN refugee camps.|
Urban Catalyst's Response:
Urban Catalyst is responding to the Syrian Refugee Crisis in 3 critical ways.
1. Providing financial assistance to local humanitarian groups and organizations that are working on the front lines and providing direct aid to Syrian Refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.
2. Sending volunteer workers from the U.S. to work with local humanitarian organizations in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, providing direct aid and comfort to Syrian Refugees living outside of the UNHCR camps.
3. Working with local refugee resettlement agancies and partnering with other local organizations to provide assistance to refugees coming to Houston. We are preparing for a steep increase in the number of Syrian refugees coming to the US beginning in the second half of 2015.
